It has escaped gardens where it has been grown as an ornamental and medicinal plant and is now broadly naturalized across the continental United State.
Because of its high levels of saponins, which produce a lather when washing, the plant was a common ingredient in gentle soap solutions. The affiliation gave soapwort its nickname “Bouncing Bet,” which is an old term that refers to a woman (“Bet” is a derivative of the name Elizabeth) “bouncing” while vigorously scrubbing laundry.
Bouncing Bet seeds should be imbibed by placing the seeds (within soil) in a black bag, then placing in the fridge for three weeks.
